It has the plastic "O-Ring" that has a rubber diaphragm in the middle of it with a hole that is just large enough to push the cast through. Once over the cast, the rubber diaphragm creates a seal on the skin that keeps water from getting into the cast cover bag.

I have now used the cast cover in the shower as well as the bath and the cast has stayed completely dry. We also have the teachers put it on when it is time to play outside in the sandbox. Handy, handy, handy! And inexpensive too! You can buy one of these for $20-$40. Cheap for the convenience, in my opinion.

Here is where we bought ours: www.brokenbeauties.com

While I certainly hope that you never need one, if you end up with a cast in your household, I would strongly recommend buying a cast cover!

Until next time, be well!

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details

However, our family is mending and healing and certainly our troubles are minor compared to so many others. But, doesn't it just "feel" like we are all "waiting to exhale"?

It just feels to me that things will continue to get more complicated, negative and problematic in the short term before things feel better. The economy is obviously (and finally) reacting to the "all you can eat" real estate finance buffet that was extended to consumers over the past few years. And, we have this weird election going on. Florida and Michigan clearly knowing they were breaking rules and whining that they now can't play. McCain in Iraq giving poor speeches, Hillary and her migraine inducing shrill voice yelling at me that she is going to make things better and Obama feeling pressured to say bad things about the man that married him because he had a "black rant".

Come on, think about it. Do you really, really want a panderer to be the next President? How many friends do you have, whom you love and trust, but disagree with them on certain subjects or even a single argument? Seriously, does every politician need to distance themselves from everyone who may have a strong opinion because it may offend someone? What have we come to?

I blame - yes, BLAME - the media. You put crap up there and then tell me how to think about it. Well, F-You Bill O'Reilly and Lou Dobbs and Chris Matthews and all of the rest of you looking for or fabricating sensational political stories that are only (if at all) partly correct. Seriously, my life is full of enough drama as it is, the news media need not compound it.

I am ready for the answers to the nominee for the Democratic Party - and I do hope it is Obama.

I am ready for gas prices to come down.

I am ready to hear the real plan to curb inflation and minimize the recession we are now facing.

I am ready to feel less frenzied and defensive.

I am waiting to exhale.

Until next time, be well!

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details

So, what is a badge and how do you get one?

Well, a badge is really just a piece of photo, graphic or text that has been uploaded somewhere onto a public server and often links to a web page. See? Not complicated. Now some bloggers have terrific artistic skills (and very expensive graphics software) and get very, very creative with the graphic they design as their badge. Me? I am not so talented and I don't own expensive software. So, I enjoy using a site I found that works very well for my limited badge making requirements.

If that sounds familiar to your current skill set, then get thee over to www.hyplet.com and they will take you step-by-step on how to create a badge that is creative, informative, cute, personal and quirky badges and most importantly, they work!

Here is an example of a badge that I made in about 2 minutes:

There are avatars, business cards, social network id panels and all sorts of graphics, backgrounds, fonts and other choices that will allow you to get pretty creative without having to master complicated graphics and coding skills.

I do hope this helps one of my blog readers! www.hyplet.com has been a great, free "web find" for me!

Until next time, be well!

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details

(Go ahead, click on it!)

I love this website. It is free, easy to use and I have used it countless times to modify photos and clip art. You don't have to log-in, create a profile or provide any information in order to immediately get started Snipshot's cropping, resizing, enhancing, adjusting or rotating your art and photo files. I LOVE THIS WEBSITE! (Seriously, I am getting a bit concerned about feeling that strongly about a web site.)

The main screen asks you to browse your hard drive for the photo or file that you would like to modify. Once selected, you click the Upload button and within nanoseconds, you are presented with your photo or art and a basic menu you can use to change your photo.

Resizing and cropping have been my most used features. Whether you are using Snipshot to resize for an avatar, profile picture or background, this webware is easy, painless and FREE! Once you have done cutting, resizing, recoloring or enhancing your photo, Snipshot lets you save your file in several formats; .jpg, .gif., .pdf, .psd, .png, and .tif. And, Snipshots is nice enough to simply explain the benefits of each type format. Kewel!

Hint: I have also used Snipshot to change file formats of free clipart. Just an easy breezy thing to do.

Snipshot, a fabulous website you should add to your favorites.

Geeky. Pizza.

Tomorrow you can call your local Domino's and order a pizza and some breadsticks throw in a order of buffalo wings and then log on to watch the magic. Okay, a bit overstated but this IS about pizza and football.

After placing your order, go to www.Dominos.com and click on Track Your Pizza link. Enter your telephone number (the number you used to place the order) and web pinky promise not to track any other pizza but your own. You will then your will be rewarded with your order status. What it even cooler is that you will know your driver’s first name and be able to rate that driver after your pizza delivery has arrived.

In a press release from Domino's, Chief Information Officer, Chris McGlothlin says:

Once customers place an order, they can go to www.dominos.com and click on the Pizza Tracker icon. They will see a horizontal bar that lights up red as each step in the process is completed. Customers will see confirmation of their order being received by the store; when it's being prepared; when it's been placed in the oven; when it's been boxed and placed in the Domino's HeatWave(TM) bag; and finally, when it's on its way for delivery.

So, is "pizza tracking" necessary? Not really. Will you use it? Maybe. Once or twice. What Dominos website application do I think is cooler? Ordering pizza from your mobile phone on your way home from work - Domino's Mobile. Enter your mobile number on the website and they will send a link to http://mobile.dominos.com. You will have to register your number through the website before you can start ordering from your mobile phone - and - text message rates will apply.

I also like the fact that Domino's will let you pre-order your pizza, breadsticks & wings online for your half time food delivery.

If anyone uses Domino's Pizza tracker on Superbowl Sunday - please leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Until next time, be well.

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details

Lifetime lasting love.

I was 30.

I had a completely unfamiliar and urgent desire to have a baby with this man. I wanted a baby.

I had a son at 33.

My life turned upside down.

I thought I was prepared. I read all of the books. I surrounded myself with support. On paper, I was ready for motherhood. Before and during my pregnancy, you could not have convinced me that I was not prepared for motherhood. I helped raise my brothers and sisters. My first car was a minivan that came with a soccer schedule. I even helped with my youngest brother's birth. I was sure I knew what to expect.

My postpartum experience was a disaster. An absolute disaster. In retrospect, there are many things that I could have done differently that may have eased my motherhood transition. But, even if my initiation into motherhood had been less intense, overwhelming and completely life altering, I don't think it would change my truth that if I had to do everything over again, I would would not have had a baby.

Until now, I have only offered that statement in very private and trusted conversation. That statement has been received as an unbelievable surprise to those who know me . As I mentioned, I am a good mother and there isn't anyone, including my husband or son, who would disagree. The connection and love I have for my son, combined with my ability to properly care for, nurture and teach my son confirms, for me, that I am a good mother. However, it has required tremendous work, unending patience and the gift of time to learn to appreciate and enjoy being a mother. For me, motherhood has been a rocky road.

One of the most surprising things to me was to find out that I am "not a baby person". Prior to having my son, I have vague memories of hearing other women saying they were not "baby people" but I never knew what that meant. I remember thinking, "how can you NOT like a baby"? I LOVED babies. From my non-mother perspective, tiny babies were cute, smelled good and were fun to hold. I had no ability to understand nor appreciate the notion that not everyone enjoys infants. I get that now. But, how was I to know that I would be one of "those people"?

As I shed my tears, I was assured that infancy would quickly enough transition to toddler and for many new parents, that is a welcome transition. For me, that was a very true prediction. There was something almost magical that happened around my son's second birthday that added considerable pleasure for me as a mother. My love of my son was joined by the "like" of my son. At two, I really liked interacting with my son. At two, was no longer a baby, he was a little person. He was talking, walking and purposefully affectionate and engaging. I had always heard troubling stories of the terrible twos, for me, the age two was a well deserved gift. A true relief. A sign of hope, for me. I love to read Amalah's blog and in this post, she shares her moment of "like" for her son. At two, I both loved and liked my son.

My son will be three next month. This morning he crawled into our bed and wiggled himself over to me with the express intention to be snuggled. What a thrill and a gift to wrap my arms around him, smell his sweet smell, stroke is perfect cheeks and whisper how much I love him. These are the moments I cherish and mindfully add to my memory banks. Moments like these often accompany the personal testimonies of many mothers when they refer to the joys of their motherhood experience.

Since the day my son was was born, there has always been love. My feelings of love were thankfully matched with feelings of "like" at age two. And, at age three, I can gratefully include joy. And, if you are wondering, unfortunately, the joy of motherhood cannot be compared. That, of course, is my opinion. Motherhood joy has no equal. It is this joy that I was unwilling to miss when I was 30 and in love.

I now feel and know motherhood joy. But, at this point, motherhood has not been a net positive experience for me. I cannot tell you that I am a better person now than I was before having a child. I cannot tell you that I am a healthier person, wealthier person, happier person or more confident person. I can tell you that I am a wiser person and that I now know the unequaled joy of motherhood. Motherhood joy has come to me with a very heavy cost and I am not willing to offer to any woman who is hesitant or unable to have a child that motherhood joy is an essential life experience.

I was surprised, stunned and saddened that my motherhood transition was so troubled. I have had to work hard, harder than I have worked for anything in my life, to figure out how to emotionally make motherhood work for me. It has been with talk therapy, support from other mothers and using antidepressants to combat postpartum depression that I have been able to emotionally move motherhood from one my weaknesses to one of my strengths. While I knew things would change, I was surprised how drastically motherhood has affected every single aspect of my life. Motherhood has impacted my relationships, my career, my finances, my emotions and my body more that I imagined. Motherhood changes everything.

Because of my experience, I am not shocked by the actions and reactions of Brittany Spears. I am not shocked to hear of women who leave their children. I am not shocked when mothers cry, yell and emotionally breakdown. It does not shock me when mother's go so far to express their frustration, sadness and emotional distress by harming their own children. I am deeply troubled and terribly saddened but not shocked. Our society prefers to speak of motherhood in happy, bubbly tones and tolerates sarcastic frustration. There is an unspoken expectation that if you have given birth to a baby, you should also inherently possess the skills you will need to properly, and joyfully, raise a child. Not all women have those skills and not all women will be able to develop those skills. What does a woman do if she has a baby and is never able to find joy in motherhood? In our society, there is a lifetime of shame associated mothers who place their babies up for adoption, so in many cases emotional and/or physical abuse and neglect are often the result of a better alernative not chosen . But, the complicated issue of placing a child up for adoption is best left for another post.

Thank god for blogs!

Some women transition easily into the motherhood role, some women transition over a longer period of time and some women never make the transition at all.

So, how do we support each other? I think offering personal truth is essential. I firmly believe that respecting a woman's choice to not have children is just as important as supporting a woman's desire to have children. I waffled about adding a child to my life and sat on the proverbial fence for ten years. In retrospect, I think there was some inner wisdom trying to speak to me. In my early twenties, I was sure I did not want children. In my late twenties, I was not sure. In my early thirties, I was in love and did not want to miss the experience of motherhood and I heard the ticking sound of my biological clock loudly. In my early thirties, I had a baby.

I have offered my truth and I will continue to offer my truth to women who ask or seek my story. I do not regret, resent or bemoan being a mother. However, if you asked me about motherhood and if I would do over again, I would tell you no. I would tell you that if I had to do it over again, I would be 36 and still sitting on the fence about becoming a mother.

Until next time, be well.

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details
OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet.

After thinking about this situation, I think this mother should be applauded and commended. Good parenting can sometimes be tough, demanding and can create extreme discomfort.

Congratulations Jane Hambleton for being the meanest mom on the planet!

Until next time, be well,

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details

She is lovely, treated me kindly, enjoyed her time with my husband (her son) and is anxious to meet her grandson, Scooby. What a lovely experience and I look forward to many more!

My own mother has provided me with the most unexpected familial transition as it relates to my son, the first born of the "next generation". On paper, my mom is WORLD's #1 GRANDMA!!! If you call her, email her, stop by her desk at work, visit her home...she is all things grandmother. She proudly displays pre-school art, photos and will share information about her grandson, Scooby. However, my mom came to visit in us during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. My mom also lives far away, about 100 miles from Washington, DC. At first my mother was thrilled to see her grandson and there was lots of immediate celebration and enjoyment upon her arrival. However, as the days passed, my mother's interest in her grandson went from relatively high to pretty much non-existent. I was (am) stunned. How could she not want to wrap her arms around him the entire time she was here? How could she not want to engage him in his funny little almost-three years old conversations? How could she not want to play with him, color with him, sing with him and cuddle with him? What kind of a grandmother was this woman who I did not recognize? Oh, how I was disappointed! Then, I remembered. I remembered my youth. I remembered being the oldest and I remember observing her with my younger siblings. My mom is not a "kid person". She likes infants and adults. My mom "doesn't do" kid. It just reminds me that while there are different "kinds" of mothers, there are also different kinds of grandmothers. Not all of them are the idealist version we broadly brush stroke across our society.

So, I have all of these relatives that are now related to my son. What I want for my son and his relationships with his half-sisters, aunt, uncles, step-aunt, step uncle, grandfather, step-grandmother and grandmother may not translate into a realistic expectation. I don't want to create any environment that discourages any relationship (even if I consider it "not enough") Scooby can have with his entire family. Sigh and more sighs.

So, I am working on tweaking my prior expectations and creating realistic ones. What can I do to create positive experiences and provide opportunities to nurture bonding between Scooby and <STRIKE>my</STRIKE> his family? Well, I am not sure but I have a couple ideas and I am hoping for the best.

Hmmm...when great expectations meet your relatives you get relative expectations I guess. Anyone care to share their experiences with new motherhood and their extended family members?

Until next time, be well!

Erin
ExpectingExecutive
Helping You Manage Life's Details
